Sportsman Bass Club
By Ramona DavisThe Sportsman
Bass Club is a member of the Mississippi Bass Federation. MBF is
a member of The Bass Federation. As a federated club, we follow
the TBF guidelines for our tournaments. Each angler fishes for
their own five-fish limit. Boaters draw out from the non-boaters
to determine pairings for each tournament.
The primary goal for each member of this club is to qualify
to fish the MBF State Championship Tournament. To achieve this
goal, members compete in our club’s monthly tournaments that are
held from February thru November. The top 12 2008 anglers
qualify for the 2009 State Championship Tournament. The 2009 MBF
State Championship will be held May 6-9 in Columbus,
Mississippi. Six boaters and six non-boaters will represent the
Sportsman Bass Club.

Our monthly tournament lake is decided by vote at each months
meeting. Lake choices are nominated and can be in Mississippi,
Louisiana, Alabama or Arkansas. In addition to our monthly
tournaments, we hold two Open Annual Fund Raiser Tournaments at
the Ross Barnett Reservoir. Money raised at these tournaments
pays for our members’ expenses to the State Championship. It is
also used to fund our clubs annual two-day fun fishing trip and
tournament. The secondary goal for our members is to compete for
Angler of the Year. The winner is determined by most weight
caught for the year.

The top 12 finishers at the MBF State Championship will
qualify to be on the MBF State Team. This team will represent
our state at the TBF Regional Championship. Members of the
Sportsman Bass Club have consistently qualified for the
Mississippi Team. Often our club has sent two members to
regionals on the Mississippi team.

The Sportsman Bass Club is made up of a group of great guys
and me. So why am I singling myself out? I’m the first and only
woman member of the Sportsman Bass Club. I’ve found that this
club is more than just men in a Bass Club. Everyone willing
shares their skills, knowledge and techniques. And, they also
share their friendship. Our annual two-day fun fishing trip, our
Christmas Party and all the many other weekend fishing trips
prove that this club is made up of more than members, we are all
friends, too.
