San Antonio Bass Club

The San Antonio Bass Club (SABC) formed in 1962 with G. G. Gale, Jr. as president. Incorporated on March 27, 1963, the board of directors included Gale, Don Paeglow and T. P. Lancaster.

The club’s first tournament was held at on May 19, 1963 at Medina Lake.
SABC members have also been very active with the Texas Association of Bass Clubs (TABC) since it was officially organized on April 22, 1971. TABC, as an organization, has worked for Texas anglers for over 35 years. Much of this work has been done “behind the scenes”, with the results becoming apparent at a later date. TABC’s board of directors continually monitors events and proposed ideas that are of concern to the bass anglers of Texas.

On June 20, 1974, club president, Joe Chacon, Jr. and fellow SABC representative, R.B. “Doc” Tuggle along with Al Pancoast, representative of Triple XXX Bass Club, and Russ Abbot, Paul Schmedicke, R.L. McQuatters, and Jack Lewis, representatives of Mission City Bass Club, gathered to discuss and organize the San Antonio Metropolitan League of Bass Clubs (METRO). Today the club boasts many excellent bass anglers.

SABC is a “family friendly” bass club with approximately 90 regular members, many of them couples and many Junior and Pee Wee division youngsters.

The SABC is a major sponsor of the Annual Boysville Fishing Tournament. Boysville Inc. is identified as “A Emergency Shelter and Group Home for Children”, and currently shelters and counsels both boys and girls. The annual fishing tournament is an event that up to 100 youngsters look forward to participating in each year, as they are provided the opportunity to enjoy a morning of fishing on the lake with bass club “guides” who share their knowledge of fishing and also promote boating and water safety.

As the tournament ends, the youth weigh-in their catch and a grilled hot dog lunch with all the trimmings is then served. The event concludes with an awards ceremony. Youngsters leave with greater self-confidence and broadened awareness of the outdoors — not to mention full stomachs and big smiles on their faces. For many of these youngsters this is the first time they have ever been fishing or get to ride in a boat. The excitement and appreciation these youngster show make this experience something that the most volunteers never forget.

Richard Drake is the 2008 club president and the club meets at the San Antonio Bass Pro Shop at 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Visitors are always welcome.
