Fish go nuts over new Squirrel Head

When those who follow professional bass fishing hear the name Jeff Kriet, the first two things likely to come to mind are his fondness for funny stories and shakey head fishing. He is considered to be an expert at both.

So it is with both in mind that Jewel Bait Company announces its new shakey head jig head, the Squirrel Head. The unique new product is built to Kriet’s demanding specifications. The head gets its name from his funny side.

Kriet has been called “The Squirrel” by fellow BASS Elite Series anglers ever since he was out-staged by a water skiing squirrel at a winter boat show a couple of years ago. It seems Jeff thought the large crowd that was gathering was waiting for his seminar, but in reality they were there for the squirrel’s performance. Enough said.

The Squirrel Head incorporates features never before seen in a shakey head jig head. Of first notice is its football shape featuring flat, recessed ends as its eyes. In fact, every side of the head has a flat spot by design. The flat underside allows the Squirrel Head to stand up at almost a 60-degree angle.

The head's surface is “dimpled.” The dimple effect, like on a golf ball, makes the Squirrel Head skip straight and continuously, which is ideal for skipping under docks and overhangs.

The hook is custom made by Mustad specifically for Jewel and this jig head. It is a light wire design with an extra long shank, and it is strong and sharp. The eye is perpendicular to the shank and has a custom angle to keep the bait dancing and in a perfect strike position. The eye is also recessed into the head making the Squirrel Head more weedless than standard shakey heads. The hook’s finish is black nickel.

Also innovative is the Squirrel Head’s bait keeper. The keeper is stainless steel stranded cable molded into the head and that lies along the hook shank. Its sharply angled end points back toward the head. With a soft plastic bait secured in place, the rig’s weight is centered to the head, meaning the bait will have a vertical fall that is preferred for fishing around docks and other structure. The wire form does not interfere with hooksets like some bait keepers do, helping to increase the hook-up ratio even more.

The Squirrel Head is offered in two colors: Black Gold in the 1/8 and 1/4-ounce sizes, and Black Copper in the 3/16 ounce. The different colors according to sizes helps anglers quickly distinguish among the different weights even if all should end up in the same tacklebox compartment. All sizes have a 3/0 hook.

The Squirrel Head is packaged three jig heads per pack. A package retails for around $6.99.

Fish Go Nuts Over Jewel’s New Squirrel Head

Jewel Bait Company’s new Squirrel Head jig gets its goofy name from BASS Elite Series angler Jeff Kriet, who shares the same nickname.

Other than that, there is not much goofy about this fish-catching jig built to avid shakey head angler Kriet’s demanding specifications.
