Honda’s BF90 and BF75 Outboards

Completely redesigned for 2007, Honda Marine’s BF90 and BF75 4-stroke outboard engines offer boaters two models that provide immediate response coupled with smooth, powerful acceleration and fuel efficiency in both fresh and salt water.

Both the BF90 and BF75 engines feature a number of Honda design exclusives, including:

  • Honda’s exclusive Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST) system advances ignition timing throughout the entire rpm range, resulting in explosive hole shots;
  • Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC™ - BF90), utilizes mild cam lobes to operate the intake valves at low rpm, and engages a high output cam lobe for high rpm operation;
  • a Lean Burn Control system uses an oxygen (O2) sensor to automatically adjust the air/fuel mixture according to speed and load while maximizing power throughout the acceleration range, providing greater fuel economy in cruise mode;
  • a 3-Way Cooling System reduces heat by allowing the cylinder head to run slightly cooler than the engine block, greatly reducing engine wear and maximizing engine power;
  • 44 Amp Flywheel (magneto) type alternator utilizes small neodymium magnets in the flywheel housing, contributing to the units’ light weight and offering “‘Best in Class” 35 Amp battery charging capacity.

The Honda BF90 engine is available in both 25-inch and 20-inch shaft models, while the BF75 comes in a 20-inch shaft length. All new Honda outboard engines for recreational use have a non-declining, 3-year limited factory warranty that is the same on the last day as it is on the first.

Minn Kota®’s New Terrova™

Minn Kota®’s new Terrova™ trolling motor took home Best of Show honors in the Boating Accessory category at the 49th annual International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades (ICAST) show held in Las Vegas. The New Products Showcase competition drew 600 tackle and accessories entries.

Minn Kota brand manager Joe Brown said, “This is by far the most advanced bow-mount trolling motor we have ever manufactured. Its development is a direct result of extensive consumer research and input from avid anglers to better understand how they fish with our products.”

Terrova showcases a breakthrough stow and deploy mechanism featuring fall-away ramps that effortlessly deploy the motor into the water along with a balanced motor design that greatly reduces stowing effort. The innovative electric steering platform for Terrova has been engineered to provide incredibly responsive and precise steering, with resolution of less than one degree.

An all-new ergonomically designed corded foot pedal comes standard with Terrova. Its low-profile design puts less strain on the foot and ankle, and offers anglers the best of both worlds in steering options – heel-to-toe or left/right steer buttons.

These motors are offered in 55-lb (12 volt), 80-lb (24 volt) and 101-lb (36 volt) thrust levels, with optional AutoPilot™ and Universal Sonar 2.

Yamaha F150

The F150 from Yamaha Marine satisfies the needs of anglers looking for quiet, fuel-efficient power for mid-sized boats.

Yamaha has traditionally used V6 powerheads for engines in this range. For the F150, Yamaha broke that tradition and instead uses a compact and lightweight Inline-4 powerhead. This actually has a greater displacement than Yamaha’s two-stroke V6 outboards with the same power rating - 2.7-liter vs. 2.6-liter - while weighing in at only 466 pounds.

The F150 is an ideal motor for single installation on boats from 17- to 22-feet and for dual installation on boats from 23- to 27-feet. Counter-rotating models are available in 25-inch shaft lengths for dual installations to keep the boat tracking true.

While our four-strokes are popular with saltwater anglers, this F150 will find a home on just about any boat, including pontoons, deck, flats, deep V and offshore models.

The powerhead features lightweight forged pistons and specially heat-treated crankshaft and connecting rods for additional durability and strength. A flywheel dampener reduces crankshaft vibration for smoother operation and less wear on the engine’s internal components. Gear case components are also stronger including the clutch, shift cam and specially heat-treated forged gears. In addition, water-sealed outer walls reduce engine noise.

The engine itself features a double-overhead cam design for greater valve timing control plus four valves per cylinder in Yamaha’s Crossfire Valve System to provide clean, powerful combustion. A crankshaft offset by 10mm provides larger intake volume making way for the four tuned intake tubes coupled with a large-volume intake silencer to boost the torque in the low- to mid-RPM range for quick acceleration. The composite-made intake tubes and silencer help reduce overall weight of the motor. A blow-by gas reburning system removes any unburned fuel from the exhaust gases and routes it back into the fuel delivery system to be more-efficiently burned.

The large displacement and 4-to-1 exhaust system increase exhaust efficiency to enhance maximum power output while a 2:1 gear ratio provides strong acceleration.

To reduce engine noise as much as possible, the F150 features a labyrinth exhaust system and water-sealed outer walls.

Available with a 20- or 25-inch shaft length, the F150 features a wide-range power trim and tilt that goes from -4 degrees for quick hole shots to +16 degrees to improve top-end performance. The F150 can also be raised and lowered while the boat is on the trailer with the conveniently located pan-mounted tilt switch. On counter-rotation models, the pan-mounted trim switch can be located to the outward side for ease of use.
